Preparing for Your Little One’s First Birthday Photoshoot

Your baby’s first birthday is such a big milestone—and I’m so excited to help you capture all the giggles, sweetness, and celebration that comes with it! Whether it’s a themed cake smash, a cozy family moment, or a little mix of both, here’s everything you need to know to get the most out of your session:

1. Let’s Talk Outfits

Cute, comfy, and camera-friendly is the goal! You’re welcome to bring one or two outfit changes for your little one, depending on how they tolerate outfit swaps.

Ideas for outfit styles:

  • Classic: Rompers, soft dresses, suspenders, knits, or denim

  • Themed: Outfits that match your session theme or color scheme

  • Cake Smash: A diaper cover, tutu, or simple onesie (things that can get messy!)

💡 Pro Tip: Avoid logos or bold prints—neutrals and soft tones photograph beautifully!

2. Bring the Essentials

Toddlers are unpredictable—so a little preparation goes a long way! Pack a small bag with:

  • Snacks and water/milk (to keep baby happy in between shots)

  • Favorite toy or comfort item (something familiar can help soothe)

  • Wipes, extra diapers, and a backup outfit (just in case)

  • Any props or special items you want included (personalized signs, balloons, heirlooms, etc.)

3. If We’re Doing a Cake Smash...

  • Bring a cake that’s baby-safe and easy to smash! Soft frosting works best. (Avoid hard fondant or dark-colored dyes that stain.)

  • If you’d like help choosing a cake style or bakery, just ask—I’ve got recommendations!

  • Don’t forget a towel, change of clothes, and wet wipes for cleanup!

Optional:

  • A neutral or themed cake stand

  • Decor like banners, balloons, florals, or a custom backdrop (I can help with ideas!)

4. Parents & Siblings

If family members are joining in for a few photos (highly encouraged!), wear outfits that coordinate but don’t match exactly. Neutral, soft, or earthy tones work great and keep the focus on baby. Keep accessories simple and shoes comfy.

5. Most Important: Go with the Flow

At this age, little ones run the show—and that’s okay! Don’t stress if your baby isn’t smiling the whole time or needs a break. Some of the sweetest moments come from the real, in-between interactions. I’ll work around their mood and keep things relaxed and playful!
